All summer
School may be out for the summer, butÌýstudentsÌýwho attendÌýÐǿմ«Ã½â€™sÌýAgriculture Science CenterÌýhave their hands fullÌýyear-round.ÌýAnd even without classes, every day is still busy.ÌýThat’s because they have steers, lambs, goats, chickens, heifers, rabbits and more to take care of.ÌýDedicated to theÌýhealthÌýand cleanliness of allÌýtheÌýanimalsÌýhoused at the Ag Center,Ìýsome students start their day at 6:30 a.m.Ìýand don’t conclude their day until 9:00 p.m.!ÌýÌý
The Agriculture Science Center opened in October 2017ÌýtoÌýserveÌýhigh school studentsÌýwith an interestÌýinÌýanimals and agriculture.ÌýFunded by the 2014 Bond, the facility makes ag education and raising an animal accessible to allÌýhigh schoolÌýstudents. Prior to 2017, ag students had to find their ownÌýaccommodationsÌýfor animals, which could be expensive and out of reach for many.ÌýNow that the Ag Center is open, students have a free place to house their animals.ÌýÌý
The process of raising an animal is anÌýeducation in itself. It starts when aÌýstudentÌýpurchasesÌýtheÌýanimal.ÌýTheyÌýthenÌýraiseÌýand trainÌýthe animalÌýas their ownÌýat the Ag Center,Ìýand then finallyÌýtheyÌýauctionÌýthe animalÌýoffÌýfor consumptionÌýto the highest bidder.Ìý
How do students pay for this?Ìý
Purchasing an animal can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.ÌýTo procure an animal most students try to attain a scholarshipÌýthrough competing in stock shows.ÌýStudents compete inÌýstock showsÌýin Houston, Fort Worth, San Antonio and San AngeloÌýin what is called a “calf scramble.â€ This is where a group of students chase around a group of calvesÌýin a show arena and tryÌýto putÌýa halterÌýaround the calf and drag itÌýto the middle of the arena. If the student is successful, they win a scholarship that can total up to $1,500ÌýandÌýmust go toward the animal.ÌýThis helps with purchasing supplements, feed, bedding, hair care,Ìýetc. If aÌýmarketÌýanimal does well at show theyÌýcanÌýbe auctioned off andÌýtheÌýstudent can earn up to $200,000.ÌýIt seems simple,Ìýbut the time and dedicationÌýthe student givesÌýareÌýwhat determine the animal’s success.Ìý
Future Farmers of America
Kyle Durr,Ìýan Ðǿմ«Ã½ alumnusÌýand nowÌýaÌýteacherÌýat theÌýAgÌýCenter,Ìýhas seen the programÌýgrow from when he wasÌýa student attending Arlington HighÌýSchool.ÌýÌý
“As a student,Ìýthere wasn’t a space to keep the animals like thereÌýisÌýnow.â€ÌýÌý
DurrÌýjokinglyÌýadmitsÌýhe’s a little jealous of the progressÌýofÌýthe programÌýand the facilityÌýandÌýwishesÌýhe had it asÌýaÌýstudent. But he is also proudÌýof how far it has come.ÌýA perk to his position is thatÌýDurr gets to teach amazing studentsÌýlike Sophee Dever,Ìýpresident of theÌýArlingtonÌýFFAÌý(Future Farmers of America)Ìýand Ryan Smith,ÌýFFAÌýsecretary.Ìý
Dever and Smith explained that theÌýAg CenterÌýhas a three-circleÌýmodel. TheÌýFFAÌýisÌýan organization thatÌýhelpsÌýpromotesÌýagriculture education andÌýteachesÌýleadership.ÌýPortionÌýtwo of the model is the classroom curriculum (vet med,Ìýadvanced animal science, etc.)ÌýFinally,Ìýthere is theÌýSAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience), which helpsÌýstudents buildÌýonÌýtheir knowledge fromÌýthe classroomsÌýon topics such as raising livestock like cattle to evenÌýtesting their skills inÌýhorticulture.ÌýÌýÌý
Dever and Smith,Ìýwho are now seniorsÌýat Arlington High,Ìýhave been a part of the program since they wereÌýfreshmen. Dever,Ìýwho has two lambsÌýat the facilityÌý(Bullseye andÌýSlinky),Ìýplans toÌýattendÌýTexas Tech to study wildlife.ÌýSmith,ÌýwhoÌýhas aboutÌý50ÌýbreedingÌýrabbits at his farm at home,Ìýplans toÌýattendÌýTexas A&M to study animal science orÌýveterinaryÌýscience.ÌýForÌýstudentsÌýlike Dever, Smith andÌýMartin HighÌýSchoolÌýjuniorÌýTylerÌýHausenfluke,Ìýthe Ag Center andÌýbeing in the FFAÌýis awesome because of friends, learningÌýthe materialsÌýandÌýcultivatingÌýleadershipÌýqualities.ÌýÌý
