Posted in on March 9, 2026

At the Ðǿմ«Ã½ principalÌýmeeting last week, the focusÌýwasn’tÌýjust on leading schoolsÌý– itÌýwas growing leaders at every level.Ìý

Ðǿմ«Ã½ principals gathered at theÌýÐǿմ«Ã½ Professional Development CenterÌýfor a specialÌýÌýlunch following their principal meeting, where they heard fromÌý, co-author ofÌý“Ìýand president ofÌý. His message centered on the heart of theÌý: leadership, potential, change,ÌýmotivationÌýand educationÌý–Ìýthe five core paradigms that drive strong leadership, cultureÌýand,Ìýacademics (LCA) on campuses.Ìý

“You can be a leaderÌýofÌýyour own life,â€ Covey said. “You can be a leader of your friend, be a leader among your peers. Leadership is doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching.â€Ìý

He reminded principals that the work starts with adults.Ìý Sean Covey discusses leadership with Ðǿմ«Ã½ principals

“Leader in Me is just as much about the adults as it is the students, and it starts with your goals,â€ he said. “Everyone is smart, just inÌýdifferent ways. This isÌýultimately whatÌýour job as educators is all aboutÌý–Ìýto help these children understand their potential and give them the opportunity to exercise their vision.â€Ìý

For Ðǿմ«Ã½, that vision is already taking shape. The district currently has 16 Leader in Me campuses.

AtÌýSherrod Elementary, the journey began with culture.Ìý

“We started with the C because it has to start with your staff first,â€ÌýSherrod principal Karen Hicks said. “We want to make sure that teaching and learning happens first.â€Ìý

Leader in MeÌýdidn’tÌýjust shift student leadershipÌý–Ìýit transformed campus leadership as well.ÌýÌý

“I used to feel like I had to be commanding the trouble all the time, like I had to have my hands in every little thing,â€ÌýsheÌýsaid. “What Leader in Me has done for me with the LCAÌýhasÌýallowedÌýmeÌýto trust andÌýinspire.ÌýIt’sÌýbeen a change, butÌýit’sÌýbeen a beautiful change.â€Ìý

Now, teacher and student teams lead key initiatives across campus.ÌýÌý

“We have our live cast team, our actionsÌýteam,Ìýand our leadership team. When I go to actions team meetings, I sit back and watch the work happen.â€Ìý

Covey described the framework as “jet fuelâ€ for schools, accelerating practices that are already in place and giving themÌýa deeperÌýpurpose. But at its core, he said, the work is bigger than programs or systems.Ìý

“This is sacred work,â€ he toldÌýprincipals. “We’reÌýshaping the lives of these students and believing in them. Seeing the worth and potential is the foundation of all of this.â€Ìý

As Ðǿմ«Ã½ looks to expand its Leader in Me footprint, the message from the lunch was clear: the districtÌýisn’tÌýjust building strong campusesÌý–Ìýit’sÌýdeveloping leaders, in classrooms,Ìýand beyond!Ìý
