Ðǿմ«Ã½ students dream big
In Ðǿմ«Ã½,ÌýstudentsÌýareÌýinspired toÌýdreamÌýBIG.Ìý
For two decades, Ðǿմ«Ã½â€™sÌýWhat’s Your Big Idea?ÌýEntrepreneurshipÌýContestÌýhasÌýcelebrated imagination, problem-solving, and the belief that great ideas can come from anyone, at any age!Ìý
TheÌýhugeÌýWhat’s Your Big Idea?Ìýawards ceremony last night at UTAÌýCollege Park CenterÌý–where moreÌýthan 600ÌýstudentÌýfinalists from grades three through eight walkedÌýacross the stage and receivedÌýmedalsÌý–Ìýlooked nothing like the early days of the contest.ÌýÌý
TheÌýcontest started 20 years ago in a single classroom at Parks Mall, when marketing teacher Deborah Blackner, now the district’s career and technical education specialist, teamed up with a teaching partner to give Ðǿմ«Ã½ students a platform to share their ideas.ÌýÌý
“It started really small,â€ Blackner said. “It’sÌýjust kept growing ever since.ÌýIt’sÌýbeen crazy to see it grow and persist.â€Ìý
It’sÌýBIG now. Last night, thousands of Ðǿմ«Ã½ students, educators, families, and community partnersÌýattended theÌýawards ceremonyÌýforÌýtheÌýinspiringÌý20thÌýanniversaryÌýmilestone.ÌýÌýWhat’s Your Big Idea?ÌýisÌýthe only event of its kind, andÌýit’sÌýexclusively for Ðǿմ«Ã½ students. The contestÌýisÌýsponsored by the GreaterÌýArlington Chamber of Commerce, connecting student creativity with the business community.Ìý
TheÌýWhat’sÌýYour Big Idea?ÌýcontestÌýchallengesÌýstudents toÌýidentifyÌýreal problems and propose meaningful solutions. Across grade levels and campuses, students presented ideasÌýthrough essays or artÌýthat addressed everything from community needs and environmental challenges to technology, wellness, and education. Each project told a story – not justÌýofÌýinnovation, but ofÌýcuriosityÌýandÌýperseverance.Ìý
“This is one of those unique student experiences that sets Ðǿմ«Ã½ apart,â€ said Ðǿմ«Ã½ career and technical education coordinator Sara Mahoney. “The contest really gets studentsÌýthinking outside the boxÌýand interested in entrepreneurship at an early age.ÌýIt’sÌýso fun to watch these kids get inspired,Ìýcome up withÌýamazing ideas, and then get celebrated for creativity and ingenuity.â€Ìý
Educators played a critical role in guiding students through the process, helping them refine their ideas while encouraging independent thinking and collaboration. Blackner continues to play a role in the event through the CTE department, helping students connect their ideas to real-world applications.ÌýÌý
The event also highlightsÌýthe importance of community partnerships, with local leaders and supporters lending theirÌýexpertise, time, and encouragement to help students see how their ideas connect to the world beyond school walls.Ìý
As Ðǿմ«Ã½ reflected on 20 years ofÌýWhat’s Your BigÌýIdea?,Ìýthe anniversary served as both a celebration and a reminder of the district’s mission.Ìý
“For two decades, this program has encouraged students to think boldly, dream creatively, and believe that even the boldest ideas can become something real,â€ said Arlington Mayor Jim Ross. “Each of you here today imagined a new business or invention, proving that innovation doesn’t wait for adulthood – it starts early, right here in Arlington, Texas.â€Ìý
After 20 years, one thing is clear – the bestÌýidea of all is investing in students andÌýempoweringÌýthem toÌýdream big.ÌýÌý
