Accelerated Learning: In the summer of 2021, the Texas legislature passed House Bill 4545 which ended the Texas Student Success Initiative (SSI). SSI previously required students to meet passing standard on the STAAR tests in reading and mathematics before they could be promoted to the next grade level. The grade advancement requirement within the SSI is now replaced with Accelerated Instruction.

When a student receives a performance rating of “Did Not Meet Grade Level for a STAAR or EOC exam, 30 hours of Accelerated Instruction must be provided for that content area. The Accelerated Instruction hours required is per tested subject. This means that if a student receives the performance rating of “Did Not Meet Grade Level for more than one STAAR or EOC exam, the student will receive 30 hours of Accelerated Instruction for each. Accelerated Instruction is provided outside of regular core instructional time, which can be before/after school, or during a dedicated intervention time.
